The Cross of Calvary: A Call to Prayer, Faith, and Surrender.

The journey to the Cross of Calvary is one of the most powerful moments in history. It reveals the depth of sacrifice, love, and obedience shown by Jesus Christ. As He approached the cross, He prayed, “Not my will, but Yours be done,” showing complete surrender to the will of God.

On the cross, Jesus bore our sins, our curses, and even our sicknesses. Through His suffering, He made a way for us—a new path of life and salvation. Though the path was painful, it was also victorious. By overcoming death and the power of the enemy, He opened the door for eternal life.

    Watch and Pray

Before going to the cross, Jesus gave an important command to His disciples:

“Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)

Even when the spirit is ready, human weakness can lead us astray. That is why prayer is essential. In the garden, Jesus prayed earnestly, and He was strengthened to fulfill His calling. His example teaches us that:

    • Prayer brings strength
    • Prayer gives victory over temptation
    • Prayer aligns us with God’s will

Jesus prayed with such intensity that His sweat was like drops of blood. Through that deep prayer, He embraced the sacrifice that brought us salvation.

The words of Jesus Christ remind us: “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” This shows that even when our hearts desire to do God’s will, our human weakness can hold us back.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed earnestly before going to the cross. As described in Gospel of Luke 22:43, an angel came and strengthened Him. Even after receiving that strength, Jesus did not stop—He prayed more intensely. His sweat became like drops of blood, showing the depth of His struggle and commitment.

Through that prayer, He gained the strength to continue toward the cross of Calvary. That moment teaches us something important: prayer is victory.

However, His disciples were unable to stay awake and pray. Because they did not pray, they became weak and scattered. This shows us that if we want God’s will to happen in our lives, we must pray diligently.

    Jesus prayed:

“Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours be done.”

His prayer brought victory—not by avoiding suffering, but by submitting to God’s will.

    🙏 The Power of Prayer

Prayer is our strength. Through prayer:

    • We overcome temptation
    • We understand God’s will
    • We receive answers
    • We gain spiritual victory

As Jesus said, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

    ✝️ The Suffering of Christ

In Gospel of John 19:1, Jesus was scourged. He suffered greatly for us.

    Scripture teaches:

“By His stripes you were healed” (from First Epistle of Peter 2:24).

Jesus bore pain, humiliation, and rejection:

    • He was mocked and beaten
    • A crown of thorns was placed on Him
    • People spat on Him
    • He remained silent before accusations

He did not defend Himself, showing humility and obedience.

    Carrying the Cross

Jesus calls each of us to follow Him. In Gospel of Matthew 16:24, He says:

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”

Even Peter the Apostle once tried to stop Jesus from going to the cross, but Jesus corrected him. The path of Christ includes sacrifice.

Paul the Apostle also said in Epistle to the Philippians 3:10:

“That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings.”
    The Power of His Suffering

Jesus was beaten, mocked, and scourged before being crucified. Yet, His suffering was not in vain.

“By His stripes, we are healed.”

He carried our sicknesses and bore our infirmities. Because of this, we can pray with faith, believing in healing and restoration. Instead of focusing on our pain, we are called to look to the cross and trust in what He has already done.

A Life of Humility and Endurance

Even when falsely accused, Jesus did not defend Himself. He remained silent and endured suffering with humility. This teaches us how to respond when we face trials, rejection, or injustice.

If we truly walk the path of the cross:

    • We learn to endure hardship
    • We let go of pride and self-justification
    • We trust God even in suffering

    Take Up Your Cross

Jesus calls each of us to follow Him:

“Whoever does not take up their cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.” (Matthew 10:38)

The “cross” in our lives may look like:

    • Suffering
    • Rejection
    • Sickness
    • False accusations
    • Personal struggles

But these are not meaningless burdens—they are part of our journey with Christ. When we carry our cross with faith, we walk in His footsteps.

    Surrender and Transformation

    The Apostle Paul reminds us:

“I have been crucified to the world, and the world to me.” (Galatians 6:14)

To follow Christ is to surrender everything. It means counting all things as loss for the sake of knowing Him and experiencing both His resurrection power and His sufferings.

The message of the cross is not just something to reflect on—it is a call to live differently.

    • Pray diligently
    • Surrender to God’s will
    • Believe in His healing power
    • Endure trials with faith
    • Take up your cross daily
Jesus gave everything for us. Now the question is: are we ready to follow Him on the path of the cross?

Let us commit ourselves fully to Him, trusting that through the cross comes victory, life, and eternal glory.

A Song That Reflects The Call

“I Died For You On Calvary” Credits YT Lion Zion

    1.
The world may come against you, did you count the cost?
When family forsakes you, will you bear the cross?
Though everyone may hate you, can you suffer loss?

    Chorus:
I died for you on Calvary, what have you done with your life for Me?
I died for you on Calvary, what have you done with your life for Me?

What have you done with your life for Me?

    2.
    The fame and wealth you’re seeking are but vanity;
All worldly joys are fleeting, can your heart now see?
My child, to you I’m speaking, come and follow Me.

    3.
My sheep are without shepherds in the fields of sin,
You who know the Saviour, will you bring them in?
Leave your own desires, precious souls to win.

    4.
You will be My treasure when you leave your all,
My grace is without measure as you heed My call,
Will you now surrender, love Me more than all?

    5.
My servants stand on Zion, for they followed Me,
Their lives a song of heaven’s sacred mystery,
They reign from holy Zion through eternity.

    A Final Reflection

Only one life, yes only one,
    Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then in that day my Lord to meet,
    And stand before His judgment seat;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.
