EVERY THOUGHT CAPTIVE

Guarding the Mind in Christ

Paul the Apostle, who once said that he was the “chiefest of sinners,” could bring every thought—not just some thoughts—into captivity to the obedience of Christ by the grace of God. “We have the mind of Christ,” he declares in First Epistle to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 2:16).

It gives us encouragement to know that by the sovereign mercy of God we too can bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, so that we may have the mind of Christ.

A crystal-clear Christian life is possible only when an extremely thick wall of jasper is built all around our mind. Then we will be able to say along with St. Paul:

“The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
Second Epistle to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 10:4–5)

Let us ask the Lord to build the wall of Jerusalem around our minds. Nehemiah was not deterred by the efforts of enemies who tried to hinder the work of building the walls. As it is written in the Book of Nehemiah:

“We made our prayer unto our God and set a watch against them day and night.”
— Nehemiah 4:9

Let us show the same determination to keep our minds crystal clear, guarding our thoughts through prayer and vigilance.
