Pride is a trait that exists in every human life. No one can truly say, “There is no pride in me.” If someone does, it is often because they are unaware of it. Pride reveals itself in different situations throughout our lives.
One of the greatest dangers of pride is its ability to hide itself. In its early stages, it may go unnoticed. But as it grows, it becomes more subtle—convincing a person that they are humble. At that point, correction is often rejected, because pride leads us to believe that we are always right.
So how does pride first appear in our lives? Often, it begins as joy in small victories. While joy itself is not wrong, we must be careful to recognize when it turns into pride. We need to bring it under control—but even then, we can only do so to a certain extent on our own.
True humility goes deeper. Even when we humble ourselves, God may allow situations and people in our lives to further refine us. These moments are not punishments, but opportunities for growth. When God allows such circumstances, we should accept them willingly, trusting that He is shaping our hearts and leading us into deeper submission.
One of the most dangerous forms of pride is the belief that we “know everything about God.” This kind of spiritual pride lifts a person up to a place where they no longer seek or listen. But in His love, God will bring such individuals to a place where they must humble themselves again.
Pride is a sin that God resists.
Humility, on the other hand, is not merely something we display before people. True humility is seen in how we stand before God—completely surrendered in His hands.
A truly humble person may face accusations or situations where they cannot defend themselves. Yet instead of reacting, they turn to God. In that surrender, there is strength. In that humility, there is protection. And in that posture, there is blessing.
May God grant us the grace to humble ourselves in every situation. For in due time, He will lift up those who walk humbly before Him.
