How Christians should live

Living as Light in a Crooked Generation

We live among a perverse and crooked generation, yet as Christians, we are called to shine as light in the midst of darkness.

When people around us live in crooked or perverse ways, we must not follow their example. No matter the circumstances—even if we feel alone—we are still commanded to keep God’s commandments. That commitment may sometimes look foolish to the world, but it is how we express our devotion to the truth.

A Life Without Murmuring or Disputing

One of the ways Christians are called to live differently is by doing everything without murmuring or arguing.

Murmuring often begins in the mind. Serious thoughts form within us, and eventually, those thoughts enter into words. There is a transformation that takes place: a change in mood and spirit. Murmuring may be mental or verbal, but either way, it affects our hearts.

It can be a struggle, but it is still a commandment:
“Do everything without complaining or disputing.”

Who Is the True Winner?

On a worldly scale, the winner is often the one who silences the other person.

People may say proudly, “I asked him one question, and he kept his mouth shut.”

But in the Christian life, the winner is different. The true winner is the one who stops the fight—the one who puts an end to the argument. God calls us not to win disputes, but to pursue peace.

Trials and What We Hold Onto

What exactly is a trial?
A trial is a difficult situation—a season of hardship.

When we are on the trail of suffering, we need something firm to hold onto. The Kingdom of God may be invisible, but God has given us something tangible: His Word.

In the face of trials, we must hold tightly to the Word of God.

But simply going through trials does not guarantee success. How we react during trials matters deeply. When God allows challenges in our lives, we must not murmur or dispute. Instead, we must cling to His Word in order to endure faithfully.

Trials Do Not Automatically Produce Victory

Consider school: do we receive a degree simply because we attend classes? Of course not.

We must pass examinations to earn the certificate.

Similarly, just because we experience hardship does not mean we will succeed spiritually. The response is what determines the outcome.

The Word of God: Promises and Commandments

There are two parts to God’s Word:

1.The Promises of God

2.The Commandments of God

During trials, we often focus on God’s promises and say,
“Lord, You promised this—don’t let me down.”

But God does not forget His promises. We do not need to remind Him or pressure Him to fulfill them. Instead, what we must do is believe.

A faithful response is:

“Lord, You have promised, and I trust that You will fulfill it.”

At the same time, we must also obey God’s commandments. Christians shine in this world by holding to God’s promises with faith and keeping His commandments with obedience.

Shining as Lights in the World

This is how we live as light in a crooked generation:

  • Without murmuring
  • Without disputing
  • Holding firmly to God’s Word
  • Trusting His promises
  • Obeying His commands

May God give us grace to hold fast to His Word and reflect His light in a dark world.
