The Wisdom of the Ant: Preparing in the Season of Peace

“The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer.” – Book of Proverbs 30:25

The ant is a small and seemingly insignificant creature, yet it carries great wisdom. Though it is not strong, it understands seasons. It gathers food in the summer because it knows winter is coming.

During winter, ants cannot move freely. A single drop of rain can be dangerous. The cold makes it impossible for them to gather food. So they prepare in advance. They work while conditions are favorable. They store what they need before the difficult season arrives.

Seasons in Our Spiritual Lives

Just like the ant, our lives also move through seasons.

There are seasons of peace — when everything feels calm, stable, and comfortable.
There are seasons of conflict — when we face struggles, trials, disappointments, and spiritual battles.

The mistake many of us make is this:
When we are in a season of peace, we become spiritually relaxed.

  • We pray less.
  • We read the Word less.
  • We attend church casually.
  • We feel we can manage on our own.

But when conflict comes, suddenly we cry out to God. We fast. We pray with tears. We desperately seek His presence.

Why do we wait for winter to prepare?

Summer Is the Time to Store

Peace is not a time to become spiritually lazy. It is the time to prepare.

When life is calm, that is when we should:

  • Deepen our prayer life
  • Strengthen our relationship with God
  • Meditate on His Word
  • Build spiritual discipline
  • Grow in faith

The grace, strength, and Word we store in times of peace will sustain us in times of conflict.

If we neglect our spiritual life during peace, we may find ourselves weak and helpless when trials come.

Preserving the Grace of God

Everything good we receive from God — His mercy, His blessings, His teachings — should not be taken lightly. We must preserve them in our hearts.

Because when adversity arrives, it is not the prayers we pray at that moment alone that sustain us. It is the relationship we built with God before the storm.

A strong foundation is not built during the earthquake. It is built long before it.

A Prayer for Wisdom

May God grant us the wisdom of the ant —
To prepare in the summer,
To store in the season of peace,
To grow closer to Him daily,
So that when adversity comes, we will stand firm and not be shaken.

In times of peace, if we do not build a close relationship with God, we may find ourselves helpless when conflicts arise. Without spiritual strength, we can easily stumble and fail during seasons of trial.

Therefore, we must draw nearer to God. We need to pray more, seek His presence daily, and deepen our connection with Him. The goodness and grace we receive from God should not be taken lightly — we must store it in our hearts, because it will sustain us when we face difficulties.

May God grant us the grace to spend more time with Him now, so that when adversity comes into our lives, we will be strong enough to withstand it.
