Every believer has an eternal inheritance prepared by God. Yet the Bible repeatedly challenges us to examine where our true portion lies. In Nehemiah 2:20, Nehemiah boldly declared that those opposing God’s work had no heritage, no right, and no memorial in Jerusalem. This powerful statement invites us to ask a personal question:
Where is your spiritual inheritance?
Is your heart invested in the Kingdom of God, or has it become attached to the values of the world?
1. Your Spiritual Inheritance Depends on Your Fellowship
Scripture teaches that our associations influence our spiritual direction. Psalm 50:18 warns against joining with thieves and immoral people. When believers willingly embrace sinful lifestyles or celebrate ungodliness, they distance themselves from God’s holy purposes.
God calls His children to be in the world without becoming part of its sinful system. Our closest relationships should strengthen our walk with Christ, not weaken it.
“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals.'” (1 Corinthians 15:33)
2. Guard Your Integrity
The Bible consistently condemns dishonesty. Whether it is stealing, deception, or misusing what God has entrusted to us, sin damages our fellowship with Him.
Integrity is more than avoiding theft—it is living transparently before God and people. The Lord desires faithful stewards who honor Him in every area of life.
3. Stay United with God’s People
The New Testament emphasizes the importance of Christian fellowship. Isolation often leads to spiritual weakness, while unity strengthens faith.
Believers are called to encourage one another, pray together, worship together, and bear one another’s burdens. A divided heart cannot fully enjoy the inheritance God has prepared.
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3)
4. Reject False Teaching
The early church was repeatedly warned about false doctrine. Not every teaching that claims to be biblical truly reflects the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We must examine every message through the Scriptures, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth. Sound doctrine protects our faith and keeps us rooted in Christ.
5. Beware of Pride
King Nebuchadnezzar’s downfall reminds us that pride separates us from God. When we depend on our own strength instead of God’s grace, we place ourselves in danger.
Humility keeps our hearts teachable and reminds us that every blessing comes from the Lord.
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
6. Keep Your Eyes on the Heavenly Kingdom.
Our greatest inheritance is not earthly wealth, success, or recognition. It is eternal life with Christ in the Heavenly Kingdom.
Every decision we make should reflect our desire to belong to God’s eternal kingdom. Temporary pleasures cannot compare with the everlasting glory promised to those who remain faithful.

Nehemiah’s declaration still speaks today: our spiritual inheritance is found only in God’s kingdom. Let us examine our lives honestly, turn away from anything that competes with Christ, and remain faithful until the end.
