The Importance of God’s Presence in Our Lives
This prayer comes from the life of King David, a man of God who lived during the Old Testament. David experienced God’s presence in many ways throughout his life. Anointed by God to lead His people, David often faced enemies and dangers, yet he consistently sought God’s will. His life was preserved because he relied on God’s presence.
David desired to have a pure heart before God. He knew that without God’s presence, he would face trouble and could not survive on his own. As Scripture reminds us:
“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” — John 6:37
God has promised that we are graven upon His palms, and nothing can separate us from Him if we remain close:
“Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” — Isaiah 49:16
When we stay in God’s presence, He preserves us.
Man was created to live in God’s presence. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve initially walked with God. Yet, through disobedience, they hid from His presence:
“And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.” — Genesis 3:8
God did not cast them out—they chose to depart from His presence. Similarly, when we obey God, we preserve His presence; when we disobey, we forfeit it. God communicates with us in mysterious ways, and obedience allows us to maintain closeness with Him.
The presence of God brings perfect peace. Just as God promised Moses in the wilderness:
“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” — Exodus 33:14
Wherever we go, we must carry God’s presence with us. When His presence is with us, our souls experience rest and peace.
Let us ask God for his grace to remain in God’s presence, to obey Him, and to walk continually in His will. In doing so, we will be preserved and filled with His perfect peace.
