Walk Circumspectly: Do My Will or Do Whatever You Want

by perfectinchristjesuslife community

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 5:15 – “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise.”

In today’s world, one of the most popular messages is: “Follow your heart.” “Do whatever makes you happy.” “Live life your way.” These ideas sound attractive because they promise freedom and independence. However, the Bible presents a very different message.

Two Opposing Voices

The Lord Jesus Christ calls us to follow His will. He lovingly guides us in the path of righteousness because He knows what is best for us.

On the other hand, a famous occultist, Aleister Crowley, promoted the phrase:

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”

This statement has influenced many philosophies, songs, and lifestyles. It encourages people to live according to their own desires without submitting to God’s authority.

At first glance, this may seem like freedom. Yet Scripture teaches that our hearts are naturally inclined toward sin.

Why Following Our Own Will Is Dangerous

Human beings are born with a sinful nature. No one needs to teach a child how to lie, disobey, or act selfishly. These tendencies arise naturally because of sin.

God understands our weakness. Therefore, He lovingly instructs us:

“Do My will.”

This is not because God wants to control us for His benefit, but because He wants to protect us from destruction.

Satan’s strategy is different. Knowing that people naturally drift toward sin, he whispers:

“Do whatever you want.”

What appears to be freedom often becomes a trap.

The Way That Seems Right

The Bible warns:

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14:12)

Notice that the verse does not say the path looks dangerous at the beginning. In fact, it may appear pleasant, enjoyable, and harmless.

Many people start down a road that seems right in their own eyes. Everything appears fine for a season. But eventually the path leads away from God and toward spiritual ruin.

This is why believers must be careful. Not every opportunity, desire, or source of happiness comes from God.

Walking Circumspectly

To walk circumspectly means to walk carefully, wisely, and with spiritual awareness.

Before making decisions, we should ask:

  • Is this God’s will?
  • Does this honor Christ?
  • Have I sought godly counsel?
  • Am I hiding this decision from those who spiritually care for me?

Young people especially need the guidance of parents, pastors, teachers, and mature believers. God often uses spiritual authority to protect us from mistakes that we cannot yet see.

True Freedom Is Found in Surrender

Many people think Christianity is bondage because it calls for obedience. Yet the Bible teaches a deeper truth:

The path to true freedom is surrender to God.

Sin promises liberty but produces slavery. Christ asks for surrender, but He gives eternal life, peace, and genuine freedom.

Jesus said:

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

The world says, “Live for yourself.”

Jesus says, “Follow Me.”

One path seems easy but ends in destruction. The other may require sacrifice but leads to life everlasting.

A Prayer of Commitment

Lord Jesus,

I surrender my life into Your hands. Protect me from the deception of sin and from the path that seems right in my own eyes. Teach me to walk circumspectly and to seek Your will above my own desires. Lead me in the way of righteousness and keep me faithful until the end.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Thought

The greatest freedom is not found in doing whatever we want. It is found in trusting and obeying the One who created us.

Choose God’s will over self-will. Walk carefully. Walk wisely. Walk circumspectly.
