Climbing the Sycamore: Zacchaeus and the Pursuit of Jesus
Zacchaeus’ profession was looked down upon by society. Publicans and sinners was a term people used to express their hatred for them. As a publican, his job was to collect taxes for the Roman government. With no strict rules on tax collection, many publicans were known to take bribes.
Yet the Bible says: “Behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was chief among the publicans, and he sought to see Jesus, who he was” (Luke 19:2–3). Zacchaeus had heard about Jesus and wanted to know Him personally. Because he was short, he climbed up a sycamore tree. The sight of a wealthy man climbing a tree must have amused the crowd, but shame and ridicule could not diminish his desire to see Jesus.
Does reproach or ridicule discourage you from seeking the truth? Zacchaeus’ determination shows that true spiritual pursuit often requires courage, regardless of what others think.
It is remarkable that Zacchaeus chose a sycamore tree. Jericho had many taller, more impressive trees, yet this seemingly insignificant tree stood by the very road Jesus would pass. It was the only tree that would enable him to see the Savior. In this, the sycamore tree becomes a symbol of a true servant of God—humble in the eyes of the world, yet living faithfully in “the way of the Lord.”
As the Scriptures remind us: “God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen” (1 Corinthians 1:27–28).
Dear reader, are you looked down upon by society? Are you an object of ridicule or shame? Remember, Jesus, who came in search of Zacchaeus, seeks you too. Seek the guidance of true servants of God. Though they may seem insignificant in worldly terms—like the sycamore tree—they are great before God and can help seekers of the truth encounter Him.
