“Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him.” — Daniel 6:3 (NKJV)
Many Christians desire the anointing of the Holy Spirit. We pray for it, seek it during worship, and long to experience God’s power in our lives.
But an important question remains:
What does a truly anointed life actually look like?
Is the anointing simply about spiritual experiences, emotional worship, or speaking in tongues? Or does it produce something much deeper?
The Bible shows us that the true work of the Holy Spirit transforms a person’s entire life. It changes character before it changes circumstances. It produces holiness before influence. It develops faithfulness before promotion.
One of the clearest biblical examples of this is Daniel.
Although he lived as a captive in pagan Babylon, Daniel became one of the most influential men in history—not because of political power or natural brilliance alone, but because the Spirit of God was at work within him.
Three times Scripture highlights the secret of Daniel’s life:
“An excellent spirit was in him.” (Daniel 5:12; 6:3)
His life teaches us what happens when God’s anointing is allowed to fully operate in a believer.
1. The Anointing Produces Holiness
The first evidence of God’s anointing is holiness.
Daniel made a decision early in life:
“Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself…” (Daniel 1:8)
Living in Babylon meant constant exposure to compromise, idolatry, and temptation. Yet Daniel refused to allow the culture around him to shape his character.
True anointing always leads us away from sin and toward holiness.
Many people measure spirituality by outward demonstrations. However, Scripture consistently teaches that God’s first work is inward transformation.
A heart devoted to God becomes a life devoted to God.
Holiness is not legalism.
It is love expressed through obedience.
When the Holy Spirit fills us, He gives us the desire and strength to live lives that honor Christ.
2. The Anointing Separates Us from Worldliness
Daniel served in Babylon without becoming part of Babylon.
He worked in the king’s palace.
He held one of the highest government positions.
He interacted daily with unbelievers.
Yet Babylon never captured his heart.
This is one of the greatest miracles of the Holy Spirit.
God doesn’t always remove believers from difficult environments. Instead, He empowers us to remain faithful within them.
Psalm 1 describes the blessed person as someone who refuses to walk in ungodly counsel or settle into sinful lifestyles.
The Holy Spirit gives believers discernment.
He teaches us which influences strengthen our faith and which slowly weaken it.
Being separate from the world does not mean isolating ourselves from people.
It means belonging completely to Christ while living faithfully among those who do not yet know Him.
3. The Anointing Creates a Lifestyle of Prayer
Daniel’s strength was not found in politics or position.
It was found in prayer.
When King Nebuchadnezzar demanded the interpretation of his dream, Daniel first sought God.
Later, when prayer was outlawed, Daniel continued praying three times every day (Daniel 6:10).
Prayer was not his last option.
It was his first response.
The Holy Spirit always draws believers into deeper fellowship with God.
Prayer becomes more than a religious duty.
It becomes the breath of the Christian life.
A believer who consistently prays develops spiritual sensitivity, wisdom, peace, and dependence upon God.
Whenever prayer disappears, spiritual weakness soon follows.
4. The Anointing Activates Spiritual Gifts
Daniel was gifted by God with supernatural wisdom and revelation.
God revealed dreams, mysteries, and hidden things through him.
These gifts brought glory to God and opened doors of influence before kings.
Likewise, every believer has received gifts from the Holy Spirit.
Some are called to teach.
Others encourage.
Some lead.
Others serve.
Still others receive gifts of wisdom, discernment, prophecy, healing, faith, or mercy.
These gifts are never given for personal recognition.
They exist to glorify Christ and strengthen His Church.
Paul encouraged Timothy:
“Stir up the gift of God which is in you.”
Many believers have gifts that remain unused.
God desires every Christian to discover, develop, and faithfully exercise what He has entrusted to them.
Daniel remained useful to God because he remained faithful to the gift God had given him.
5. The Anointing Gives Victory Over the Enemy
Perhaps the most famous moment in Daniel’s life came inside the lions’ den.
Because of his faithfulness, Daniel was sentenced to death.
Yet God intervened.
Daniel testified:
“My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths.” (Daniel 6:22)
Throughout Scripture, lions often symbolize danger and destructive spiritual opposition.
The enemy seeks to attack our faith, families, ministries, and purpose.
Yet believers who walk in the power of the Holy Spirit do not need to live in fear.
Our victory comes through Christ.
The Holy Spirit strengthens us to stand firm, remain faithful, and trust God even when surrounded by impossible circumstances.
God’s presence is greater than every lion we face.
6. The Anointing Produces Faithfulness
Daniel’s enemies investigated every area of his life.
They searched for corruption.
They looked for dishonesty.
They hoped to find negligence.
Instead, Scripture says they found none (Daniel 6:4).
What an incredible testimony.
Faithfulness is one of the clearest signs of spiritual maturity.
God is looking for people He can trust.
The Holy Spirit transforms not only our spiritual experiences but also our daily character.
Faithfulness at work.
Faithfulness in our families.
Faithfulness in ministry.
Faithfulness when no one is watching.
God often entrusts greater responsibilities to those who remain faithful in the small ones.
7. The Anointing Leads to a Victorious Life
Daniel prospered under multiple kings and survived the rise and fall of empires (Daniel 6:28).
His greatest success was not wealth or influence.
It was perseverance.
He remained faithful from youth to old age.
He endured changing governments, persecution, false accusations, and impossible situations without abandoning God.
This is what true victory looks like.
The Christian life is not measured by emotional moments alone.
It is measured by lifelong faithfulness.
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to endure, overcome, and finish well.
A Personal Challenge
Daniel’s life invites every believer to pause and examine their own walk with God.
Ask yourself:
- Am I pursuing holiness each day?
- Have I allowed worldly influences to shape my heart?
- Is prayer a consistent part of my daily life?
- Am I using the spiritual gifts God has given me?
- Do I trust God when facing spiritual battles?
- Am I known for faithfulness and integrity?
- Is my life reflecting the victory Christ has already won?
These are not questions of condemnation.
They are invitations to deeper surrender.
The same Holy Spirit who empowered Daniel lives within every believer today.
As we yield ourselves to Him, He transforms our character, strengthens our faith, develops our gifts, deepens our prayer life, and leads us into lasting victory.
Final Thoughts
Daniel’s life reminds us that the greatest evidence of God’s anointing is not merely what happens in church—it is what happens in everyday life.
The Holy Spirit produces holiness, integrity, wisdom, courage, faithfulness, and perseverance.
He enables ordinary believers to live extraordinary lives for the glory of God.
May we seek not merely an emotional experience but a transformed life.
May God fill us afresh with His Holy Spirit.
May He give us an excellent spirit, just as He gave Daniel.
And may our lives shine faithfully for Christ until the day we see Him face to face.
