As followers of Christ, we are called to live by faith even when the path becomes difficult. There may be times when people mock us, shame us, speak against us, or make us feel insignificant because of our faith in Jesus. Yet the suffering we endure for Christ does not have to be a source of disgrace. When we willingly endure it for His sake, it can become a testimony of God’s glory in our lives.
When Faith Is Tested
King David experienced many difficult seasons. He describes times when God’s people were rejected, mocked, persecuted, and surrounded by enemies. Yet, despite all these trials, there was something important about their hearts: they did not turn away from God.
Trials may surround us, but the greatest danger is not the trial itself. The greatest danger is allowing the trial to turn our hearts away from the Lord.
There are two ways a person can turn back. One is outwardly, by leaving the fellowship of believers and walking away from the Lord. The other is inwardly, when the heart slowly stops trusting God.
A person may continue to appear religious outwardly while their heart has already begun to drift away. That is why we must guard our faith carefully.
Baptism: A Commitment to a New Life
The Christian life is not merely about participating in religious ceremonies. Baptism represents a profound spiritual truth.
When we come to Christ in repentance and receive forgiveness through His sacrifice, we are called to leave our old life behind. Baptism symbolizes being buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life.
It is a declaration:
“My old life has died, and I desire to live a new life in Christ.”
Baptism, therefore, should not be treated as merely a tradition or an outward ceremony. It points toward a genuine inward commitment to Christ—to obey His Word and live according to His will.
The important question is not simply whether we have been baptized, but whether we are truly living the new life that Christ has given us.
We Must Guard Our Faith
Even after coming to Christ, believers will face temptation.
We live in a world filled with sinful influences. Difficult circumstances and opportunities to sin can come looking for us even when we are trying to live faithfully. We cannot simply remove ourselves from society and assume that temptation will disappear.
Sin is not only an external problem. It can also work within the heart.
That is why faith is so important.
Our victory is not found in our ability to create perfect circumstances around ourselves. Our victory comes through continuing to trust Jesus and standing firmly in what He has accomplished for us.
We can say with confidence:
“Jesus has forgiven my sins. I belong to Him. I will continue to trust Him.”
The more firmly we hold on to this faith, the more steadfast we can become when temptation and trials come.
The Road Will Not Always Be Empty
Consider someone driving a car who says, “I will never have an accident.”
Perhaps he imagines a perfectly straight road, with no other vehicles, no pedestrians, no animals, and nothing unexpected crossing his path. Anyone would recognize that such a situation is unrealistic.
The real test of careful driving is not driving on an empty road. It is driving safely when there are many vehicles, unexpected situations, and other people who may not be as careful.
The same is true of the Christian life.
We cannot expect the world around us to become perfect before we can live faithfully. Other people may fail. Circumstances may become difficult. Temptations may appear unexpectedly.
Therefore, we must remain watchful.
We must be careful about our own lives while also being aware that the actions of others can affect us. A life of faith requires perseverance, wisdom, and dependence upon God.
Do Not Lose Your Faith
One of the greatest lessons we can learn is this:
Do not lose your faith when circumstances become difficult.
Faith does not mean that we will never face temptation, suffering, rejection, or disappointment. Faith means that we continue trusting God in the middle of those things.
When faith is abandoned, a person becomes vulnerable to falling back into sin and discouragement. But when faith is guarded, we can continue moving forward.
Paul’s words are a powerful example:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Paul did not say that the race was easy. He spoke of fighting, running, and persevering. His confidence came from having remained faithful to the end.
Keep Running the Race
Christianity is not merely about how we begin; it is also about how we finish.
It is possible to begin with enthusiasm and later become discouraged. It is possible to experience God’s forgiveness and then allow difficulties to weaken our confidence. It is possible to become tired along the journey.
But God calls us to keep going.
When people ridicule you because of your faith, keep the faith.
When circumstances become painful, keep the faith.
When temptation comes, keep the faith.
When the road becomes difficult, keep the faith.
When you feel ashamed or rejected because you belong to Christ, remember that suffering for Him is not something to be ashamed of.
The goal is to finish the race faithfully.
A Prayer for Faithfulness
Lord Jesus,
Help me to remain faithful to You through every trial and temptation. When people mock me or reject me because of my faith, give me courage to stand firm.
Help me never to turn away from You in my heart. Remind me of the new life You have given me and help me walk in obedience to Your Word.
When temptation comes, strengthen me. When circumstances become difficult, increase my faith. When I become discouraged, remind me that You are with me.
Help me to fight the good fight, finish the race, and keep the faith until the end.
