The Christian life is a journey of continuing with God. It is not enough to begin well; we are called to remain faithful until the end. Scripture repeatedly reminds us of the importance of keeping our hearts close to the Lord and refusing to turn back.
In Deuteronomy 17, God gave instructions concerning the king who would rule over His people. The king was not to depend upon horses, wealth, or human strength. Instead, he was commanded to keep a copy of God’s law and read it all the days of his life. Through the Word of God, he would learn to fear the Lord and remain humble before Him.
This gives us an important spiritual lesson: those who want to remain strong in God must remain close to His Word.
Learning to Fear the Lord
Deuteronomy 17 emphasizes that the king should continually read God’s law so that his heart would not become proud and so that he would not turn away from God’s commandments.
The Word of God protects our hearts.
When we continually listen to God’s Word, meditate upon it, and obey it, we are reminded of who God is and who we are before Him. His Word teaches us humility, obedience, holiness, and faithfulness.
Spiritual strength does not come merely from outward position or religious activity. It comes from maintaining a living relationship with God.
A Church That Moves Forward
In Ezekiel, we read about living creatures whose movement is described as going forward without turning back. This gives us a powerful spiritual picture of steadfastness.
There can be difficulties, struggles, burdens, and disappointments in our lives. Even within a congregation, people may experience problems and challenges. Yet the calling remains the same:
Do not turn back. Keep moving forward with God.
The presence of difficulties does not mean that God has abandoned His people. Our journey is not measured by the absence of problems, but by our faithfulness in the middle of them.
A People Prepared for God’s Purpose
The Bible presents the church as being connected with the glory and purpose of God.
Ephesians 5:27 speaks of Christ presenting to Himself a glorious church, holy and without blemish. Revelation also gives us the picture of the New Jerusalem coming down in the glory of God.
These passages remind us that God’s purpose for His people is greater than what we see around us today.
Christ is preparing His people.
Therefore, our focus should not simply be on present circumstances. We should look toward God’s purpose and remain faithful to Him.
Do Not Let Your Heart Turn Back
Deuteronomy 17 gives another important warning: the king was not to allow his heart to be lifted up above his brothers.
Pride can cause a person to turn away from God.
The accumulation of wealth, power, possessions, or worldly confidence can gradually take the place of dependence upon the Lord. That is why God instructed the king to continually read His Word.
We need the same discipline today.
We need God’s Word when life is going well.
We need God’s Word when we are suffering.
We need God’s Word when we are confused.
We need God’s Word when we are tempted.
And we need God’s Word when we are successful.
Every day, we need to hear God’s voice and allow His Word to keep our hearts aligned with Him.
Keep Moving Forward
The Christian life is not a call to constantly look behind us.
There may be things in our past that were painful. There may be failures we regret, disappointments we cannot change, or seasons of hardship that tested our faith.
But God calls us forward.
We should learn to move forward without continually turning back.
Our eyes should remain upon Christ.
Our hearts should remain humble.
Our lives should remain rooted in God’s Word.
And our faith should remain steadfast.
A Final Encouragement
Perhaps you are going through a difficult season today. Perhaps you are carrying burdens that other people cannot see. Perhaps you are wondering why God has allowed certain things to happen.
Do not give up.
Do not allow your circumstances to determine your faithfulness.
Return to the Word of God. Seek the Lord in prayer. Keep your heart humble. Continue walking with Christ.
God is not finished with His people.
The goal is not simply to start the journey—it is to remain faithful throughout the journey.
May we become a people who know the Word of God, fear the Lord, walk in obedience, and refuse to turn back.
Keep moving forward with Christ. Keep your eyes on Him. And remain faithful until the end.
