Guided by God’s Loving Eye
God guides His children in two ways. One way is gentle and loving. The other is corrective when we refuse to listen.
In Gospel of John 10:27, Jesus says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” Just as a shepherd lovingly leads his sheep, the Lord desires to guide us with care, tenderness, and love.
In Psalms 32:8, God says:
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye.”
To be guided “with His eye” means being led by God’s loving attention and gentle direction. A shepherd does not force his sheep; he leads them patiently, and they follow because they trust his voice.
However, if we refuse to listen to God’s loving guidance, He may need to correct us more firmly. The next verse warns us:
“Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding,
whose mouth must be held with bit and bridle.”
— Psalms 32:9
A horse or mule must be controlled with force because it does not understand the rider’s intention. In the same way, some people only turn back to God after difficulties arise—such as illness, accidents, or other hardships. Only then do they cry out, “Lord, I have gone wrong. I will obey You.”
God does not desire to guide us through hardship. His desire is that we willingly listen to His voice.
In Exodus 15:26, the Lord told the Israelites that if they would diligently listen to His voice and obey His commandments, He would protect them from the diseases that came upon Egypt.
The prophet speaks of this attitude of listening in Book of Isaiah 50:4:
“He awakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.”
This is the posture of a true disciple—one who listens carefully to the voice of the Master.
Let us not harden our hearts. Instead, let us listen to the Lord with humility and willingness to obey. When we do, we will experience His loving guidance—gentle, faithful, and sure.
God never fails to lead those who listen to Him.
