When we study the Bible, we discover that the concept of anointing differs between the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, anointing was often associated with visible symbols such as sacred oil, fresh oil, or even a mantle. These outward signs represented God’s calling, empowerment, and commissioning for His servants.
Three Expressions of Anointing
The message highlights three forms of anointing seen in Scripture:
- The Anointing Oil
- The Fresh Oil
- The Mantle (Cloak) Anointing
1. The Anointing Oil
Kings, priests, and leaders were often anointed with specially prepared oil. Aaron was anointed as a priest, Saul as king, and David received the anointing oil that marked God’s divine appointment upon his life.
This anointing represented God’s authority, calling, and empowerment for a specific purpose.
2. The Fresh Oil
David declared:
“You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.” (Psalm 23:5)
Again he said:
“I have been anointed with fresh oil.” (Psalm 92:10)
Fresh oil symbolizes continual renewal, strength, and the refreshing work of God in the believer’s life.
3. The Mantle Anointing
One of the most remarkable examples is found in the life of Elijah and Elisha.
When God instructed Elijah to appoint Elisha as prophet in his place, Elijah did not pour oil on him. Instead, he cast his mantle upon him (1 Kings 19:19). That simple act changed Elisha’s life forever.
Immediately, Elisha left behind his former life, his possessions, and his future plans to follow God’s calling.
Later, when Elijah was taken up into heaven, his mantle fell to the ground. Elisha picked it up, struck the waters of the Jordan, and declared:
“Where is the Lord God of Elijah?”
The river parted, demonstrating that the same anointing and power of God was now working through Elisha (2 Kings 2:13–14).
The Mantle Represents Spiritual Zeal
The sermon emphasizes that the mantle symbolizes godly zeal and spiritual passion.
Isaiah writes:
“He clothed Himself with zeal as a cloak.” (Isaiah 59:17)
The mantle is a picture of a burning desire for God—a holy passion that drives a believer to seek Him, serve Him, pray, fast, study His Word, and remain faithful regardless of opposition.
When this anointing comes upon a person, spiritual complacency disappears. There is a deep hunger for God’s presence and a strong desire to fulfill His will.
Jesus: The Perfect Example of Holy Zeal
When Jesus entered the temple and saw it being misused, He drove out those who had turned God’s house into a marketplace.
The disciples remembered the Scripture:
“Zeal for Your house has consumed Me.” (John 2:17)
Jesus demonstrated what true spiritual zeal looks like. His passion for His Father’s glory burned within Him like fire.
A Call to Spiritual Passion
The early church also displayed this same zeal. The apostles turned the world upside down through their devotion, prayer, faith, and obedience to God (Acts 17:6).
Today, believers need more than religious routine. We need hearts that burn for God. We need the kind of passion that keeps us praying, studying Scripture, serving others, and standing firm in faith.
The mantle anointing is not merely about power; it is about a heart fully surrendered to God and consumed with love for Him.
Conclusion
God desires His people to walk in spiritual fervor rather than spiritual apathy. Whether represented by oil, fresh oil, or the mantle, the purpose of anointing is always the same: to draw us closer to God and empower us for His service.
May we seek the anointing that produces holy zeal, unwavering devotion, and a burning love for Christ.
