Humility & Self

If we uplift ourselves, our humility suffers as a result. And when we elevate our humbleness, our self suffers. But as Christians, we are called to humble ourselves at all times — knowing that when we do, the self will be directly affected. And that is what the Christian life is all about.

In the sight of God, Saul acted as a fool, while David acted as a wise man.

And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

1 Samuel 13:13 — KJV
And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

1 Samuel 18:14 — KJV

In our lives, if we give place to self, we will act foolishly. But if we humble ourselves and live accordingly, God will mentor us and grant us wisdom.

The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.

Psalms 25:9 — KJV

When we are rejected by others and encounter a challenging situation, we should accept God's will and humble ourselves. God will guide us and give us wisdom on how to act.

Self will give us wrong advice. We should expect God to testify that we acted wisely — not foolishly. Humbleness will not hasten to speak and will not regret it, because it is wise. But self will hasten to speak, and will later regret and repent.

Both Saul and David committed sin in the sight of God. Yet when Saul’s sin was revealed, he did not humble himself — and though he acknowledged his fault, he did not accept it willingly.

But when David’s sin was revealed, he humbled himself and accepted it willingly. When we ask forgiveness from God, He expects us to truly repent.

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Matthew 23:12 — KJV

There is blessing in humility.

We receive goodness by humbling ourselves before God.

Let God give us grace to humble ourselves.
