The Difference Between Human Love and God’s Love
We humans have love in our hearts, and God also has love in His heart. Yet the way God loves is very different from the way we love others.
God calls us to love others in the same way that He loves us. But often we fail to realize that our own human love cannot reach the level of God’s love.
Human love has limits. It is like a rubber band that can only be stretched so far before it breaks. Our love may last for a while, but over time it can weaken, fade, or even turn into resentment or hatred.
But when God’s divine love lives within us, we gain the ability to love beyond our natural capacity. His love empowers us to love others in ways we could never do on our own.
Characteristics of God’s Love
God’s love is pure and purifying.
Human love can easily become corrupted by selfishness or pride. But God’s love is pure and has the power to purify the heart.
God’s love transforms.
Even when someone approaches us with selfish or worldly motives, the divine love of God within us can transform that kind of love into something pure and holy.
God’s love covers sin.
God covers our sins with His mercy. We should be deeply grateful for this grace. Imagine how ashamed we would feel if every one of our sins were exposed before others. Yet in His love, God chooses mercy.
God’s love sees the good.
God looks beyond our failures and sees the potential and goodness within us. His love focuses on restoration rather than condemnation.
God’s love bears the burdens of others.
God’s love is willing to endure pain so that others may experience joy. It carries the weight of others’ weaknesses and faults.
God’s love believes and hopes.
It continues to trust, to hope, and to believe in others even when circumstances are difficult.
A Prayer for Divine Love
What we truly need is the love revealed at Calvary — sacrificial, unconditional, and transforming love. Our human love falls far short of this divine standard.
Therefore our prayer should be:
“Oh God, fill our hearts with Your love.”
Only through His love working within us can we truly love others the way He desires.
