Trusting God Fully: Lessons from King Asa’s Life
God is always seeking an opportunity to demonstrate His power among His people. He does not withhold His power; rather, He reveals it through us when we trust Him and walk faithfully in His ways.
King Asa’s life offers a powerful lesson in this truth. At the beginning of his reign over Judah, the kingdom was at peace, while neighboring nations faced turmoil. Asa reigned for forty-one years, and for thirty-six of those years, he “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” (1 Kings 15:11). God was with him, and his kingdom prospered.
Yet, when faced with challenges, Asa’s trust wavered. When the kingdom of Israel split, he sought alliances with other nations instead of relying solely on God. Despite warnings from the prophet Hanani to depend on the Lord, Asa imprisoned the prophet rather than returning to God. Later in life, when he fell seriously ill, he turned to physicians rather than seeking divine healing. Though he began well, he ended poorly.
As Asa’s life reminds us, God sometimes allows difficulties in our lives not to punish us, but to draw us back to Himself. Humility comes in two forms:
Voluntary humility – We recognize our sinfulness and limitations, acknowledging, “Lord, I am nothing without You.”
Divine humility – When we resist God’s ways, He may allow circumstances to humble us, correcting our paths so we might return to Him.
Too often, when life breaks us or we experience failure, instead of turning back to God, we blame Him or trust in our own strength. Like Asa, we can start well but finish poorly if we do not depend fully on God.
Have we made foolish choices? Are we truly depending on God in every situation?
May God grant us grace to humble ourselves completely and trust Him wholeheartedly, so that His power is revealed in and through us.
